In an effort to stop the spread of African swine disease, President Ferdinand R. Marcos instructed the Department of Agriculture regional office in Western Visayas (DA-6) to examine all pig breeding facilities in the area on Sunday (ASF).

According to a news statement from Malacanang, the decision was issued after the DA-6 reported that cases of ASF had been identified in the region, particularly in Iloilo.

Marcos told the regional office that all steps to stop the spread of ASF are already in place, including the restriction on pig products from afflicted areas, during a situation briefing in Bacolod City.

One of the best methods to stop the spread of the virus, he continued, is to test all breeding farms for ASF.

In the meanwhile, Marcos referenced studies that suggested mosquitoes might be implicated in the spread of ASF.

Since the first known outbreak in July 2019, Iloilo and the whole Western Visayas region were among the last few places in the nation to be ASF-free.

In a meeting with the agriculture sector of the Private Sector Advisory Council (PSAC) on Friday, Marcos gave instructions on how to manage ASF, including a temporary restriction on pork imports from places other than Panay Island.

Members of the PSAC and Marcos discussed the priorities for agriculture in his government during the same meeting.

The PSAC was established in July and is made up of business executives to help the government achieve its economic goals with the assistance and backing of large enterprises.

His earlier meetings with PSAC were mostly devoted to discussing potential alliances to advance and develop the infrastructure, health, agriculture, water, energy, and tourist sectors.
