House raises P75 million in donations for the Paeng relief effort

The Speaker-led House of Representatives’ ongoing relief effort for Severe Tropical Storm Paeng’s victims has raised almost PHP75 million in cash and in-kind gifts.

The Speaker’s office said in a statement on Wednesday that as of November 1, financial gifts and pledges totaled PHP49.2 million, while in-kind donations, which include food, blankets, and toiletries, stood at PHP26 million.

“I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to all of the participants in our relief drive. (We are grateful to everyone with a good heart who supported our relief effort.) We have already helped many impacted families around the country and we promise to provide the remaining aid to the afflicted families as soon as we can, but we still need all the help we can obtain “said Romualdez.

Yedda Marie Romualdez, the chair of the House Committee on Accounts and a member of the Tingog Party list, Zaldy Co, the chair of the House Committee on Appropriations and a member of the Ako Bicol Party-list, and House Majority Leader Manuel Jose Dalipe were among those in charge of the fund drive.

Romualdez stated that the Department of Social Welfare and Development’s (DSWD) Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situations (AICS) program will provide assistance to the mission’s recipients.

Truckloads of relief supplies and other necessities for the typhoon victims have been sorted and repackaged at the Batasang Pambansa Complex in Quezon City.

Representative Joseph Lara distributed the 1,500 packs of relief supplies, 80 bundles of bottled water, and 20 sacks of rice that were given by the House of Representatives to Cagayan on Monday, according to the Speaker’s office.

On Tuesday, the same quantity was delivered to Camarines Norte communities devastated by Paeng by House staff and volunteers together with an additional box of multivitamins and the second box of vitamin C.

As part of the Speaker’s relief effort, Tacloban City and Cavite also got aid supplies.

The Tingog Party list, working with the Speaker’s office, facilitated the delivery of relief supplies to the Maguindanao households affected by the storm on Tuesday afternoon.

In the wake of Paeng, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. issued Proclamation 84 declaring a state of calamity for six months in the areas of Calabarzon, Bicol, and Western Visayas, as well as the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM).

The state of calamity is to last for six months, “unless earlier lifted by the President,” according to the declaration.
