In order to raise the funds required for the maintenance and improvement of the rail service, the Light Rail Transit Authority (LRTA) stated that it has no intentions to prolong the “Libreng Sakay” (free ride) program for students at the LRT Line 2 (LRT-2).

The LRTA stated that the free-riding program was only intended to span the first quarter of the current school year, resulting in a total loss of PHP30 million in income, in a Viber message to reporters on Monday.

According to the statement, “The initiative was created to provide some sort of assistance to families experiencing financial difficulties as a result of the pandemic and with the beginning of face-to-face sessions on August 22, 2022.”

It claimed that from August 22 to November 5, 1,623,473 pupils received free rides on the LRT-2.

The LRTA would be denied the funding necessary for its (rehabilitation and upgrading) projects if the free ride was allowed to continue, it stated.

It stated that qualifying individuals, including students, can receive a 20% discount.

Students can take advantage of the discount by presenting their ID or completing a registration form at any ticket booth or the LRT-2’s Passenger Assistance Office.
