For the ninth anniversary of Super Typhoon Yolanda, which destroyed a number of communities in the Eastern Visayas, a number of local governments in the region ceased activity in the government and all levels of education on November 8.

The first local government to issue an executive order suspending classes and work to enable its citizens to take part in the “solemn commemoration” is Tacloban, which is regarded as the epicenter of the deadly typhoon in 2013.

In an executive order, Tacloban City Mayor Alfred Romualdez stated that “a variety of activities will be held by different groups to commemorate the occurrence as a way to recognize the lessons that should be learned from the experiences and to pay tribute to the people that suffered, and those that survived the catastrophe, as well as to highlight the resilience of the people of Tacloban City.”

Local governments in Marabut, Samar; Palo, San Isidro, and Carigara in Leyte all issued similar executive orders.

The suspension of work and courses on Tuesday, November 8, is anticipated to be ordered by local governments in areas that were severely affected by the super typhoon.

Activities planned for the anniversary in Tacloban include a resilience display, a mass, a wreath-laying ceremony, a resiliency conference, a blessing and flower offering ceremony at the Yolanda Memorial Flame, and a candle-lighting ceremony.

In order to memorialize the storm victims and show their resiliency, badly impacted towns like Guiuan in Eastern Samar, Basey, Samar, Palo, and Tanauan in Leyte province have also planned a number of events.

Five to six-meter-high storm surges caused by Yolanda’s attack ravaged this city and adjacent villages, killing almost 2,000 people.

6,300 deaths were reported officially, with 5,902 of those occurring in the Eastern Visayas region.
