As part of its mission to provide smooth trade facilitation while preventing the entry of illegal products and other types of contraband, the Bureau of Customs-X-ray Inspection Project (BOC-XIP) has added X-ray machines in various ports, including Boracay International Airport.

The agency announced in a statement on Thursday that a Nuctech mobile container X-ray scanner had been set up at the Port of Cebu.

The Port of Cagayan de Oro will receive a second one.

The BOC claimed that the device features a pass-through mode function that speeds up scanning and ensures accurate inspection of all containerized cargoes. It also has the high-performance scanning capability of mobile container X-ray scanners.

At the same time, three new devices will be installed at Boracay International Airport: one stationary checked-in luggage scanner from Astrophysics and two hand-carry baggage scanners from the same manufacturer.

In advance of the start of foreign flights in December, the devices will help in the detection of contraband items hidden in luggage.

The BOC is still training its staff in order to improve its capacities for intelligence and enforcement activities.

These initiatives are a part of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s directives to Commissioner Yogi Filemon Ruiz to improve staff competency and tighten security measures in order to stop smuggling and other forms of customs fraud in the nation.
