Sultan Kudarat Governor calls on ASEAN to address climate change and the digital divide

Governor of Sultan Kudarat Pax Ali Mangudadatu stated on Thursday that the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) must find quick fixes to lessen the worst effects of climate change and bridge the digital divide among Southeast Asian youth.

Mangudadatu made the call after being presented by President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. at an interaction between ASEAN Leaders and representatives of regional young leaders.

Mangudadatu mentioned the devastation caused by Severe Tropical Storm Paeng, which hit the Philippines in October, in a speech he gave at the Sokha Phnom Penh Hotel in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

The devastation caused by Paeng, according to Mangudadatu, should serve as a “wake-up call” for Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam as well as the Philippines.

“Everyone is quite concerned about it… Things have changed as a result of climate change. Our region, formerly thought to be typhoon-free and safe from them, has now fallen prey to one of them “The ASEAN leaders were told by Mangudadatu.

“It is a warning to everyone to take prompt action. We must all cooperate to fight climate change, which is one of the biggest challenges to our future and particularly to the youth “Added he.

One of the primary concerns of the Marcos government is addressing climate change.

On Tuesday, Marcos revealed his intention to subordinate the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) to the Office of the President in order to strengthen the Philippines’ disaster response and take into account the nation’s vulnerability to natural disasters.

The Office of the Press Secretary (OPS), the executive branch’s principal communications agency, took part in Thursday’s fourth quarter nationwide simultaneous earthquake drill as part of the government’s “whole-of-nation” strategy to improve the nation’s disaster readiness.

The OPS uploaded images of its employees making the “Duck, Cover, and Hold” signal in their workplace in a separate Facebook post.

Digital chasm

Mangudadatu also urged ASEAN nations to close the digital divide between young, children, and community members, particularly in light of the current global digitalization.

Mangudadatu asserted that closing the digital divide would increase youth productivity and competitiveness.

“As we adapt to a post-pandemic environment, we stand with ASEAN in ensuring that our kids will be productive and competitive at all levels and in a variety of sectors. We also keep working to make sure that everyone would benefit from, advance and flourish in the new life and the new normal “A Mindanao young leader named Mangudadatu remarked.

The Philippines, according to Mangudadatu, “[create] young leaders who lead the youth and [honor] young leaders who lead the country and the government.”

When he was still a member of the Philippine Congress, Marcos also supported youth empowerment and authored a number of laws to that end, including the Sangguniang Kabataan Reform Law and legislation to enhance the National Youth Commission.

The meeting between the ASEAN leaders and the youth representatives provides a forum for talking about and exchanging opinions on youth development and other topics while also fostering partnerships for sustainability.

According to a Facebook post by the government-run Radio Television Malacanang, Sangguniang Kabataan chairperson Franklin Villa of Sampaguita village in Solana, Cagayan, and assistant professor Mark Bon Basadre of Father Saturnino Urios University served as the Philippines’ ASEAN youth representatives (RTVM).

The Office of the President stated in another Facebook post that the Philippine delegation promoted active participation in the creation and implementation of youth-oriented activities.

From November 10 to November 13, Marcos will be in Cambodia for the 40th and 41st ASEAN Summits and Related Summits.
