In order to further support the Philippines in developing its agricultural industry, young Filipino farmers are urged to secure internships in Taiwan the following year.

According to Peiyung Hsu, a representative of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office (TECO), at least 100 positions for Filipino farmers between the ages of 19 and 35 who are interested in receiving on-the-job training in Taiwanese farms will become available in 2023.

The applicant would be responsible for paying the airfare, but Hsu claimed that accommodations and at least a USD600 monthly stipend would be given.

In an interview with reporters, he said, “This year, we (allotted) 50 but ultimately only 48 were able to go to Taiwan; they are now working in 33 farms in Taiwan. “We will raise this to 100 for next year, and the selection process will once more begin in January.”

The Department of Agriculture, TECO, and the Manila Economic and Cultural Office collaborated to create the Filipino Young Farmers Internship Program in Taiwan (MECO).

According to Hsu, interested farmers must cooperate with their local DA-Agricultural Training Institute (ATI).

29 farmers from the inaugural group completed the 11-month program last September 2022.

On the other hand, at least 48 people were allowed to board the second flight to Taiwan last August 2022.

We would really like to see whether we could train more than 1,000 young farmers in the future because it is a sustainable enterprise, Hsu said.

“I have a strong personal attachment to this project. I frequent your land and I would dearly love to see farmers receive assistance, “Added he.

Silvestre Bello III, the chairman of MECO, stated that his organization would like to establish more productive alliances with TECO in the future, including ones involving aquaculture and agricultural technology, among other things.
