PBBM and Xi will meet in Thailand during the APEC summit.

On the margins of the 29th Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Leaders Meeting in Thailand, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. and Chinese President Xi Jinping will meet in private, Malacanang stated on Thursday.

Undersecretary Cheloy Garafil, the person in charge of the Office of the Press Secretary (OPS), announced in a statement that Marcos and Xi will meet as planned.

While Xi is anticipated to arrive in Bangkok on Thursday, Marcos took a flight to Thailand on Wednesday.

For the first time ever, Marcos and Xi will be face-to-face.

Prior to Marcos’ planned state visit to China in the first week of January 2023, the two leaders will meet bilaterally.

If he meets Xi, Marcos would address the South China Sea (SCS), according to Garafil.

The West Philippine Sea problem must always come up in conversations with China, according to the Chief Executive, she said.

Several littoral states, including China and the Philippines, have overlapping claims in the SCS, with Beijing claiming almost 80% of the disputed waters.

Beijing’s purported historic rights over nearly the entire SCS were declared invalid by the arbitral tribunal on July 12, 2016, and the Philippines petitioned against China. On that date, the Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA) in The Hague, Netherlands, issued a decision in favor of the Philippines.

However, China has consistently disregarded the PCA’s SCS judgment.

On November 11, at the 25th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit, which was held in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, Marcos urged the SCS to swiftly adopt a final, legally binding Code of Conduct (COC) and emphasized the importance of maintaining the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) as the governing body for all ocean and maritime activities.

Chinese Premier Li Keqiang represented Xi at the ASEAN-China Summit.

APEC conferences

Marcos will also be present at the Thursday gala dinner for the APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting and the APEC CEO Summit, according to Garafil.

Along with a private meeting with Chinese officials, Marcos will attend the APEC CEO Summit and the APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting Gala Dinner alongside his peers, the spokeswoman added.

In his pre-departure speech on Wednesday, Marcos expressed confidence that his attendance at the APEC meeting will result in “positive results” for the Philippines. He gave the remark at the Villamor Air Base in Pasay City.

The major objective of APEC, which was founded in 1989, is to foster sustainable economic growth and prosperity in the Asia-Pacific region.

The Philippines, Australia, Brunei, Canada, Chile, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Singapore, Chinese Taipei, Thailand, United States, and Vietnam are among its 21 member economies.
