Toll board to look into the reason for heavy SLEX traffic

The South Luzon Expressway (SLEX) and other tollways run by the San Miguel Corporation had heavy traffic on Thursday, according to the Toll Regulatory Board (TRB), which announced Friday that it is beginning a thorough investigation into the reason for the situation (SMC).

We are looking for ways to prevent similar incidents, which is why we are conducting a careful analysis and investigation into what happened yesterday, said TRB spokesperson Julius Corpuz during the Laging Handa briefing. “Ginagawan po natin ng kaparaanan na sana po’y huwag nang maulit ang mga ganiyang bagay,” he added.

The TRB official stated that the agency has also requested the network supplier of the tollways to explain in a letter the scenario that caused the severe traffic congestion, whereas the SMC ascribed the RFID system glitch to a fault with the fiber optics of their internet provider.

“Upang malaman namin kung ano pa ang naging dahilan, tama ba ang kanilang ginawa at nasa tamang panahon ba iyong intervention measures na kanilang inilagay dahil nais po naming maiwasan muli ang mga ganyang pangyayari,” Corpuz added. “Because we want to prevent such

He added that in addition to the investigation, the TRB will conduct routine audits on the tollways covered by their jurisdiction to guarantee the efficiency of the machinery and systems utilized by tollway operators.

“And if there are unavoidable incidents – whether man-made or not – there should have intervention measures that they can immediately implement to avoid inconveniencing our motorists,” Corpuz said. “And if there are unavoidable incidents – whether man-made or not – there should have intervention measures that they can immediately apply.”

Thursday’s breakdown of the RFID system at SLEX from 7 to 9 a.m. caused gridlock on roads leading to Metro Manila.

In response, Corpuz emphasized that although SMC made the decision to leave the toll barriers up to help relieve the traffic congestion, the standstill persisted for a number more hours due to the high volume of vehicles.

He said that the impacted tollways’ communications network has subsequently been restored, and traffic conditions have returned to normal.

He claimed that the SMC had expressed regret to drivers for the inconvenience.
