A health official reported on Monday that coronavirus disease (Covid-19) vaccines have been squandered to date, costing more than 31 million doses or PHP15.6 billion.

According to Maria Rosario Vergeire, the official in charge of the Department of Health (DOH), 24 million doses were thrown away due to short shelf life, while the remaining 7 million were thrown away due to temperature excursions or opened but unopened.

“When we look at the totality of this 31 million, almost 70 percent here, almost 70 percent of this were procured by the private sector and the local governments,” Vergeire said. “This 31 million po ‘pag tiningnan po natin ‘yung kabuuan, almost 70 percent po dito ay ‘yun pong na-procure ng private sector at saka ng (When we look at the totality of this 31 million

She clarified that the shelf life of the initial batches of Covid-19 injections is just six months after the date of manufacture.

The DOH previously stated that low booster shot uptake nationally was caused, in part, by Filipinos’ immunization reluctance and complacency.

As of Nov. 20, 73,707,875 Filipinos had received the entire Covid-19 vaccine, and 20,866,539 had received their booster shot.
