Action plan for PH-Aussie achieved through emergency broadcast training

The Australian Broadcasting Corporation’s (ABC) eight-day emergency broadcast training program in Canberra for Philippine government media representatives is a manifestation of the action plan for disaster management between the two nations.

The Foreign Affairs and Trade departments of both countries adopted a plan of action in August 2021, according to Philippine Ambassador to Australia Hellen De La Vega, in which priority areas of cooperation on the exchange of best practices on disaster risk reduction and management and emergency communications were identified.

De La Vega stated that it is crucial that the two nations develop a framework to improve communication to the public, especially in distant and rural areas, as climate change and extreme weather disturbances affect multiple countries.

De La Vega expressed his satisfaction in an interview over the weekend, saying, “I’m delighted that the action plans were completed and realized within the time limit.”

She continued this is already a realization, an operationalization of how Australia can support the Philippines in emergency communication through your visit here on emergency broadcasting. “It was actually a commitment from the two sides, Philippines and Australia, to cooperate on best practices on disaster risk resilience and management and on emergency communication,” she said.

According to De La Vega, because both the Philippines and Australia are marine nations, they share a number of difficulties.

Following recent significant rains in large portions of the eastern half of Australia, several areas have experienced flooding. According to the embassy, no Filipinos have been identified as having been impacted to date.

Due to the persistent rain, flood warnings have been issued for Victoria and New South Wales (NSW).

Over the course of the weekend, the NSW State Emergency Service responded to 255 calls for assistance while conducting eight water rescues.

According to foreign reports, the flooding has had an impact on the nation’s agricultural sector, damaging the sheep and dairy industries as well as the wheat and barley crops.

We can obviously identify with the Australian experience because we are a marine archipelagic country, said De La Vega.

The Australian government is keeping an eye on the disasters occurring in the Philippines, she noted.

The study visit took place from November 12 to November 19 and was attended by representatives of the media and management from the Philippine Information Agency, Philippine Broadcasting Service, Radio Television Malacaang, People’s Television Network, Intercontinental Broadcasting Corporation, Philippine News Agency, and National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council.

To gain a deeper grasp of the procedures and guidelines for efficient emergency broadcasting and communications, the group paid visits to the ABC, meteorology, emergency management, and fire service agencies.

The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade provided funding for the Emergency Broadcasting Development Project, which was carried out by ABC’s International Development Unit.
