Caritas PH has undergone a makeover for the “better good”

The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCPadvocacy, )’s development, and humanitarian arm, Caritas Philippines, endorsed the Pope’s order to restructure Caritas Internationalis (CI).

Bishop Jose Colin Bagaforo, president of Caritas Philippines, stated on Thursday that there was no corruption or financial mismanagement involved in the decision to reorganize.

“The order came as a major surprise and was unexpected, but we applaud the Holy Father’s choice and hope that Caritas will truly uphold its mission and identity. We think it’s for the benefit of Caritas and its members. But we want to stress again that there was no financial mismanagement or wrongdoing involved in the reorganization, he said in a statement.

Pier Francesco Pinelli has been named as Caritas Internationalis’ interim administrator by Pope Francis. He is a well-known administrator and organizational consultant.

He will be assisted by Fr. Manuel Morujo S.J. for the staff’s personal and spiritual accompaniment as well as Maria Amparo Alonso Escobar, CI’s current head of advocacy.

“The chance for realigning its internal structure and standard operating procedures is essential as we get ready to elect new leadership by May 2023, so the timing was good because most of us are here. We want to reassure the people that Caritas organizations all around the world, especially Caritas Philippines, are aware of the situation and stand in solidarity with CI.

Fr. Tony Labiao, executive secretary of Caritas Philippines, pointed out that the Holy Father’s choice is related to the general assembly the following year.

“We want to emphasize that the Holy Father’s decision to declare all CI executive positions vacant was made with the 2023 general assembly in mind and that the organization’s structure is still in place. We are responsible for reviewing the statutes and making suggestions for CI and the confederation’s reforms as members of the representative council from the seven areas, Labiao said.

The next regularly scheduled in-person general meeting of the CI’s member organizations will be held, during which the president, general secretary, and treasurer will be chosen. As anticipated, the gathering will take place in person in May 2023.

Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle will assist the administrator in organizing the upcoming general assembly. He will communicate mostly with the regional churches and CI member groups.

In CI, a grouping of 162 Catholic aid, development, and social service organizations active in more than 200 nations and territories worldwide, the Philippines is represented by Caritas Philippines.

The member groups’ common goal is to create a better world, especially for the underprivileged and oppressed.
