German poverty has significantly increased, a survey reveals.

According to research released on Thursday by the Hans Boeckler Foundation, poverty has significantly increased in Germany during the previous ten years.

A study by the trade union-affiliated foundation’s Institute for Economic and Social Sciences (WSI) found that between 2010 and 2019, the proportion of persons who are extremely poor—those who have less than half of the middle class at their disposal—increased by a startling 40%.

It was noted that over the previous three years, poverty in Germany had been made worse by the Covid-19 outbreak, the explosion in energy prices, and excessive inflation.

The report’s authors noted that in 2019 there were “more people in Germany impacted by poverty than ever before.”

Over the past ten years, Germany has seen strong economic growth and declining unemployment, but disadvantaged households have not profited from these developments and instead have fallen further behind.

According to the study, the poverty gap has risen from 2,968 euros in 2010 to 3,912 euros in 2019. The poverty gap is the amount that must be missing for an average poor household to technically surpass the poverty line.

Despite being one of the wealthiest countries in the world, Germany is beginning to show signs of growing poverty.

There are an increasing number of homeless individuals sleeping on the streets, moms skipping meals to try to feed their kids, and retirees searching for empty bottles to trade for the deposit.

If a person’s income is less than 60% of the median for the total population, they are deemed to be at danger of poverty in Germany.

In Germany, this amount was €15,009 net year (or €1,251 net monthly) for those who live alone.

15.8% of Germans were apparently on the verge of poverty in the previous year.

The Federal Statistical Office reported earlier this month that over 38% of German schoolchildren were at risk of poverty.

In order to offset the fast-rising costs, the German government presented a third relief package in September. This package included one-time payments to students.
