Ilocos Norte needs more medical professionals.

The provincial government of Ilocos Norte’s hospital and management council encouraged private medical professionals to contribute their experience as visiting physicians, consultants, and specialists in public hospitals here in an effort to further improve its public healthcare facilities.

There is a need for more doctors at the hospital to make sure that all patients will receive fundamental and sufficient medical care, according to Dr. Rogelio Balbag, executive director of the Ilocos Norte Hospital and Management Council, stated on Friday.

According to Balbag, money would be set aside in the provincial government’s 2023 healthcare budget to fill open posts for doctors and other medical workers.

Due to their preference for working abroad or opening their own clinics in the city, doctors and other experts have been absent in Ilocos Norte’s public hospitals for the past five years.

Governor Roque B. Ablan Sr. Memorial Hospital has signed memorandums of understanding (MOU) with a number of qualified private medical practitioners to provide their services at the provincial hospital in support of the government’s universal healthcare program while it waits for candidates to fill the open positions.

The private medical practitioner must meet the minimum requirements, including having a license with the Professional Regulatory Commission, PhilHealth accreditation, and a fellow or diplomate of any specialty society recognized by the Philippine Medical Association, as well as a notarized income payee’s sworn declaration of gross receipts or sales, in order to be eligible for the visiting consultants and specialists program.

According to the MOU, the private physician must utilize the provincial hospital’s resources, including its staff and facilities.

In exchange, they must actively engage in hospital activities and contribute their knowledge in order to provide free services to patients staying in any type of basic or ward accommodations.
Due to a doctor scarcity in the province in the past, certain public hospitals had to cut back on their services.
