The local administration of Iligan City will award a PHP2 million incentive to the barangay…

The best garbage management in PH is credited to an old LGU

In the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources’ “Malinis at Masaganang Karagatan (MMK)” search, the local government unit (LGU) that implemented solid waste management (SWM) in the island municipality of Caluya received the highest honor (BFAR).
Richard Cordero, director of BFAR-Antique, stated in an interview on Friday that Caluya’s coastal waters are clean and devoid of litter or industrial waste.
When receiving the award on November 22 at the Luxent Hotel in Quezon City, Cordero noted, “There is also no illegal fishing, and they have about 500 hectares of marine protected space.”
One of the requirements in the national search is that Caluya carefully adheres to the limited fishing season and has an efficient mangrove protection and rehabilitation program.
According to Cordero, the 18 coastal barangays in Caluya assigned responsibility for ensuring SWM and mangrove protection to their job order staff.
Caluya continues to operate its eco-park where home and business plastic trash is converted into eco-bricks.
Every barangay has a material recovery facility where the LGU collects solid wastes before transporting them to the eco-park.
Through vermin-composting, households also effectively manage their biodegradable trash, according to Cordero.
Caluya will get PHP30 million as the overall winner in the form of a money transfer.
According to the BFAR spokesperson, “The LGU would be the one to decide on how to use the funds for their priority fishery livelihood initiatives.”
