MSMEs in Negros Oriental are urged to use digital business methods

On Thursday, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) in Negros Oriental urged the province’s micro, small, and medium-sized businesses (MSMEs) to adjust to the current trend of conducting business online.

During a Kapihan sa PIA seminar, DTI – Negros Oriental Director Nimfa Virtucio remarked, “This is the way to go now, and we don’t want to see our MSMEs being left behind by other places whose businesses have already witnessed a digital transformation.”

Virtucio claimed that they came up with DTI – Negros Oriental’s “Go Digital 62XX” specifically to encourage MSMEs in the province to transition from the conventional method of conducting business to interacting with their clients online and through other digital platforms.

She pointed out that while many MSMEs run by millennials and members of Generation Z are swiftly catching on to the trend, “baby boomers” are hesitant to venture into uncharted territory for a variety of reasons.

In addition to security concerns, she stated that one of the reasons older generations are hesitant about digital change is a fear of the unknown. We need to persuade them to sign up for “Go Digital 62XX” so they can access new markets and collaborate with other companies.

According to Virtucio, some MSMEs avoid using digital payment services like GCash or PayMaya because they are frightened of losing their money in online transactions or maybe they are simply set in their ways and unwilling to adapt.

She remarked, “Change is very hard, but they have to if they want to keep up with the trends.

Local government units (LGUs) in Negros Oriental are encouraging people to implement the “Go Digital 62XX” campaign at their level by adding the last two digits of their zip code, she added.

Although the last two digits of the zip code are left vacant for the other LGUs in Negros Oriental who could wish to use their own brand, the capital city’s zip number is 6200, she noted.

The “Go Digital 62XX” program is in line with the Philippine E-commerce Roadmap, according to program executive Anton Gabila, and would help MSMEs “create their presence, communicate with clients, and accept online payments in the digital domain.”

During the epidemic, Gabila noted, “We have seen that individuals that switched to the internet platform grew better and survived while others had closed shop.”

As part of the program, DTI-Negro Oriental is free-of-charge doing Google mapping of the province MSMEs and offering educational materials on topics including digital platforms, cashless transactions, and digital engagement.

A massive information and distribution effort using digital channels, such as emails and text blasts, is intended to reach 2,400 MSMEs across the province, according to Gabila.
