To reduce stigma, the WHO renames monkeypox as “mpox.”

The World Health Organization (WHO) suggested on Monday that the monkeypox virus be renamed “mpox” to prevent racist stigma and misconceptions.

According to a press release from the WHO, both designations — monkeypox and mpox — will be used concurrently for a year as the latter is phased out.

The name change was made as a result of concerns expressed by a number of people and countries in various meetings and requests made to the WHO to suggest a new name.

The one-year transition time allays worries among specialists about misunderstandings brought on by a name change during a widespread outbreak. It also gives time to update WHO publications and finish the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) update process.

The multi-country monkeypox epidemic outside of the continent’s regular endemic areas was formally classified by the WHO as a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC) in July, the highest level of alert the organization is permitted to issue.

New and current diseases must be given names by the WHO through a consultative procedure including all WHO member states.

According to the statement, officials from 45 different governments participated in the consultation on monkeypox.

As of Saturday, 110 member states—including 55 fatalities—had reported 81,107 laboratory-confirmed cases and 1,526 probable cases to the World Health Organization (WHO).

Europe (92.3 percent) and the Americas (92.3 percent) had the most instances recorded in the previous four weeks (5.8 percent). In the week of Nov. 21–27, there were 46.1 fewer weekly reported new cases worldwide.
