By the end of December, Covid-19 cases could exceed 2.3K per day: DOH

By the end of December, the number of coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) infections in the nation might reach 2,294 per day, according to the Department of Health’s (DOH) forecast.

Dr. Alethea de Guzman, director of the DOH Epidemiology Bureau, stated in a Kapihan forum on Tuesday that the average daily cases by December would only be about 429 if the public’s existing minimum public health standards (MPHS) compliance maintains the same.

“If our MPHS compliance further declines, our daily cases by the end of December will probably range from 1,140 to as high as 2,294, and our active cases by the end of December may also reach a total of 18,000 instances, and these are national data,” she continued.

Reduced MPHS compliance is a result of increased public interaction, greater social distance, and the choice to wear masks over the holidays.

If no new version of the problem enters the nation, the increase in instances would not necessarily result in a noticeable increase in hospital utilization.

According to NCR data, “the biggest number that we will see is actually around 800 admissions,” said De Guzman.

“Nung Delta has about 1,270 admissions as its peak number. Who is speaking? (Around 1,270 admissions are made at the most during Delta. Why does that matter? Our hospitalizations will rise with the more transmissible and immune-escape variety, she said, “but not to the height or pinnacle of Delta.

She added that increasing vaccination rates in cases where there is a more contagious variation may reduce peaks by as much as 20%.

About 73,592,319 people had obtained all of their vaccinations as of November 27 and 20,718,469 had received their booster injections.

From November 21 to November 27, the nation’s average daily cases were 1,147, which was 0.3 percent more than the previous week’s average of 1,147.

As of Nov. 28, there were 526 out of the 2,430 intensive care unit (ICU) beds that were being used, or about 21.6 percent, and 5,169 out of the 20,508 non-ICU beds were being used, or about 25.2 percent.

The Episcopal Commission on Health Care (ECHC) of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP-ECHC) advised the public to maintain adherence to the minimal public health standard during gatherings this holiday season.

“Let’s just exercise caution and extra care in all we do. Because if we take extra precautions, we somehow also have safety nets against the threat of this Covid-19 (coronavirus disease 2019),” stated Oscar Jaime Florencio, chair of the CBCP-ECHC, in an interview on the church-run radio program Radio Veritas.

The Catholic priest also urged the faithful to express their gratitude for their blessings, particularly for God’s ongoing provision against the illness.

Let’s praise the Lord and beg for his assistance, he continued, for if he doesn’t, no matter what we do, we’ll really run into the enormous issue of the menace of Covid.

Earlier, the Archdiocese of Manila issued a reminder for attendees of Eucharistic celebrations and other events in churches under the archdiocese to continue to adhere to minimal public health requirements against Covid-19.
