Study: an experimental medication inhibits the growth of Alzheimer’s

According to new trial findings, the experimental medication lecanemab has the “potential” to be used as a treatment for Alzheimer’s disease in its early stages.

The drug’s creators, US-based Biogen and Japanese company Eisai, released study findings on Tuesday, revealing it to be one of the first experimental medications to reduce the progression of cognitive deterioration.

Lecanemab was proven to reduce the disease’s progression by 27% over the course of 18 months in Phase 2 trials, which is six months longer than the recommended time frame.

The experiment recruited 1,795 persons with mild cognitive impairment brought on by early Alzheimer’s disease or mild dementia associated with Alzheimer’s disease, and it was conducted at 235 sites in North America, Europe, and Asia.

The medicine was given to half the participants, while the other half received a placebo.

“Lecanemab will give patients more time to engage in daily life and live independently, according to peer-reviewed, published studies. It might require them to recognize their spouse, kids, and grandchildren for many more months “In a statement on Tuesday, the US-based Alzheimer’s Association stated.

The committee continued, “Medicines that give concrete advantages to people with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) owing to Alzheimer’s and early Alzheimer’s dementia are as valuable as treatments that prolong life for those with other fatal diseases.”

The World Health Organization estimates that more than 55 million people worldwide currently suffer from dementia, and that number will rise to 78 million by 2030 and 139 million by 2050.
