US sanctions three North Korean officials for their ballistic missile test
In reaction to Pyongyang’s intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) test last month and its development of weapons of mass destruction, the US imposed penalties on three North Korean officials on Thursday.
Jon Il Ho, Yu Jin, and Kim Su Gil have been named as persons who will be subject to sanctions by the US Treasury Department.
In April of last year, the European Union targeted the same officials for sanctions.
According to the department, they will face sanctions for playing “significant roles in the development of weapons of mass devastation by the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea,” which is North Korea’s official name.
According to reports, North Korea successfully tested its largest and most potent missile, capable of reaching all of North America, during its most recent ICBM launch in November.
In a statement, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said that “these actions come in response to the DPRK’s unprecedented launch of over 60 ballistic missiles this year, including the test of several intercontinental ballistic missiles.”
The region and the global world face serious security threats as a result of these destabilizing acts.
According to Blinken, each of the three targets is directly related to North Korea’s illegal ballistic missile development.
The US is also requesting “strong action” from the UN on North Korea, but China and Russia β two of the Security Council veto-wielding countries β have long resisted US efforts to put additional sanctions on Pyongyang.
