PNP is dedicated to safeguarding human rights in the justice system.

The Philippine National Police (PNP) stated on Monday that it is still dedicated to upholding human rights while maintaining peace and order in the nation.

As the PNP joined the rest of the government, civil society, and the entire country in celebrating National Human Rights Consciousness Week, Gen. Rodolfo Azurin Jr. delivered this statement (NHRCW).

Azurin argued that the timing of the event, which had as its topic “Pagtaguyod at pagsulong ng mga Karapatang Pantao tungo sa Matatag na Pundasyon ng Kapayapaan, Katarungan, Kalikasan, At Bayanihan,” coincided with the 74th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHD).

He continued by saying that the Philippine government should be proud of the PNP’s human rights advocacy because it has put in place the essential safeguards to ensure that these rights are upheld and that those who violate them are held accountable to the greatest extent of the law.

“We in law enforcement are called to safeguard civil, political, economic, and socio-cultural rights by law and by requirements of faith and morality. We must preserve human rights simply because it is the right thing to do, Azurin emphasized, not just because the law requires us to.

The reading of “Panunumpa Ng Kawani Ng Pamahalaan Bilang Tagapagtanggol Ng Karapatang Panato” by Brig. Gen. Vincent Calanoga, head of the PNP Human Rights Affairs Office, is one of the celebration’s highlights.

Six PNP employees were also recognized by Azurin for their valuable time, knowledge, skills, and resources in support of the PNP human rights development initiative.

Additionally, he reminded everyone in uniform that defending the rule of law and upholding public safety depends on police officers keeping their oath of office to respect, safeguard, and uphold human rights.

Indeed, the first concern of law enforcement is human rights. This is not just a revered and holy institution, but also a way of life in the PNP, as I have often underlined. Therefore, we in the PNP—including the military and the entire government—are the real upholders of human rights, he said.

Cpl. Margarita Mabborang was named the winner of the PSSLAI Good Deeds Project and received a plaque and PHP50,000 from the Public Safety Savings and Loan Association Inc. (PSSLAI).
