Marcos wants to build more high-rise apartments for the urban poor

On Monday, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. said that building additional high-rise residences might help reduce the nation’s more than 6.5 million housing backlog.

He described how his parents, the late President Ferdinand Marcos Sr. and former First Lady Imelda Marcos, tried to give the urban poor their own homes and lots through the Bagong Lipunan Improvement of Sites and Services (BLISS) project.

But given what he called a “land shortage” in metropolitan areas, he noted that these mid-rise houses might not be practical today.

When the BLISS project is finished, a mid-rise building with a five- or six-story height will have been added.

Dahil mahirap na, ngunit ngayon dahil baka siguro pataasin natin. Maybe you’re capable of high-rise living. ‘Today’s ngunit pinag-aaralan. If you recall the BLISS project, that’s where mid-rise or five to six-story structures started. Siguro case to case ito. But now that it’s challenging, perhaps we can construct them higher. Perhaps we can construct tall structures. But since it would vary from situation to case, we are presently researching this,” he remarked in a speech at the handover of new homes and lots to 30,000 Filipino families in Naic, Cavite.

The BLISS project was overseen by Marcos’ mother, who was also the Minister of Human Settlement at the time it began in 1981.

Marcos emphasized the crucial part that the Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development plays in working with the National Housing Authority (NHA) to make sure that the homes being constructed for the poor are located close to their places of employment.

“Parang isang oras ka bago makauwi lalo na sa Maynila, kung minsan ganun ang pakiramdam. However, I often feel as though it takes a year to reach home, especially in Manila. My tinitingnan is that the commute time from home to work doesn’t have to take more than an hour. But we want to make sure that it won’t take them longer than an hour to get from their homes to work,” he said.

Additionally, he stated that their homes should be close to their children’s schools and shopping centers.

New houses

Marcos meanwhile urged all recipients of housing to look after their new residences and make sure they contribute to their development.

“To our beneficiaries, as you begin a new life in your new homes, I wish that you first make your homes beautiful and love them completely because they will be the witnesses to your progress and the progress of your family,” he said. “Sa ating mga beneficiary, as you start a new life in your new homes, I wish that you first make your homes beautiful and love them completely because it will be the witness to your and your family’s progress.”

He expressed his gratitude to the NHA, the relevant organizations, and the local governments for their dedication to ensuring that all beneficiaries received their homes and lots on time.

He urged NHA representatives to keep working to make sure that every Filipino will have a home close to their place of employment.

He reiterated the requirement that the NHA and other relevant organizations make these homes resistant to the risks of natural disasters.

Additionally, he gave the people hope by assuring them that his administration would keep working until every Filipino had a place to call home.

“I am convinced that by working together, we will eventually be able to offer every Filipino family a suitable and inexpensive home,” he continued. “Tiwala ako sa pagbubuklod nating lahat, unti-unti natin mabibigyan ang bawat pamilyang Pilipino ng maayos at abot kayang tahanan.”
