Negros Oriental business chamber requests that creatives register with the SEC.

On Monday, the CEO of the Negros Oriental Chamber of Commerce and Industry (NOCCI) advised creators of original content to formally organize and register their groups or businesses for increased exposure and other opportunities.

Many of these creative individuals operate alone or in small groups, and according to Edward Du, president of NOCCI, they occasionally lack the ability to market their services, goods, and selves.

To establish a legitimate identity, Du advised that they join a formal corporation and register with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

He claimed that during the one-day Ayo Roadshow 2022 that took place in this capital city on November 29, creative content artists solicited the assistance and participation of the business and government sectors in their promotion.

The Department of Trade and Industry in Region 7 (Central Visayas) provided funding for the event, which intends to give this particular industry a place to launch the growth and development of its original material.

Except for those who have already established themselves in the local, national, and worldwide markets, many of them are typically part of the so-called underground economy, working from home or outsourcing jobs while avoiding paying taxes.

The CEO of the business chamber claimed that he comprehends the predicament faced by content producers because he is aware that their income depends on the demand for their skills and services rather than being a daily wage earner.

This is quite troubling because there is nothing to be taxed, he said, so why would anyone pay regular taxes?

Due to the erratic nature of their income, Du claimed that many attendees at the roadshow disliked the idea of filing with the SEC, or even acquiring local company permits and paying taxes.

Given that we have a wealth of local talent, we are more than happy to assist them, but we also need to formally recognize them in order to help them access more lucrative markets.

One answer, according to the head of NOCCI, is municipal legislation that would grant them certain tax breaks.

Additionally, he added, they can obtain copyright for their works without paying taxes as yet because there haven’t been any sales.
