A Senate resolution was submitted on Tuesday to commemorate Hidilyn Diaz for winning the 55-kilogram (kg) division of the World Weightlifting Championships on December 7 in Bogota, Colombia, and delivering another accolade to the nation.

The first Olympic gold medalist of the Philippines is recognized and congratulated in Senate Resolution No. 379, which was introduced by Senator Jinggoy Estrada. She “continues to bring pride, joy, and honor to the country with her yet another remarkable performance in the world arena.” The Philippine Senate should recognize such an accomplishment.

To defeat local favorite Rosalba Morales (199 kg) and Mexican Ana Gabriela Lopez, the Tokyo 2020 gold medallist cleared 93 kg on snatch and 114 kg on clean for a total of 207 kg (198 kg).

The 31-year-old Diaz was content with bronze in the 53 kg and 55 kg weight classes at 2015, 2017, and 2018 global championships.

She told Olympics.com, “It was fortunate timing because that is the last time I will compete at 55 kg.

In addition, Diaz won gold medals at the Southeast Asian Games in 2019 and 2022, as well as the Asian Games in 2018.

In a news release, Estrada noted that “her most recent and significant success as a world champion completes her incredible gold medal total from major weightlifting competitions in her already great professional career.”

After the 55 kg weight class was eliminated from the competition, Diaz hopes to move up to 59 kg for the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, which will mark her fifth and final appearance in the quadrennial Games.

For the Paris Games, the World Championships granted qualifying points.

In addition, the Senate awarded Diaz a Medal of Excellence on September 1, 2021, following her victory at the Tokyo Olympics.

In a statement recognizing Diaz last week, the Philippine Sports Commission stated, “To Hidilyn, you are a brilliant beacon of women in sports. Continue to be strong and resilient as you realize your objectives.”
