PH pledges P11.1M to the UN emergency fund for humanitarian relief

The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said on Tuesday that the Philippine government has given USD200,000 (about PHP11.1 million) to the UN Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) in 2023.

At the CERF High-Level Pledging Event (HLPE) for 2023 on December 9, Permanent Representative to the UN Antonio Lagdameo made the announcement.

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UN OCHA) organized the event with the goal of mobilizing financial resources to guarantee that CERF is well-positioned as one of the most efficient financial instruments for providing life-saving, time-sensitive humanitarian assistance.

According to Lagdameo, “our vow is a sign of our dedication to humanitarian action and of our responsible membership in the community of nations.” “The Philippines, one of the most vulnerable nations in the world, invests in disaster preparedness and early warning systems at the national and local levels through close collaboration with international humanitarian groups, civic society, and the commercial sector.”

He urged additional developing nations to support the UN OCHA and donate to CERF.

One of the best and quickest tools available to UN agencies and their partners in crisis-affected nations is CERF.

In 2022, CERF was essential in supplying the ever-increasing humanitarian needs of those affected by catastrophes.

The second-highest sum released from CERF after the record-breaking 2020 when USD848 million was disbursed, it allocated more than USD700 million as of November to support millions of individuals in need of immediate assistance in over 40 nations.

According to the DFA, CERF contributed USD12 million when Super Typhoon Odette (also known as Rai) devastated coastal areas in the Philippines in December 2021 to offer life-saving humanitarian help to those who were most impacted.
