The Eastern Visayas Department of Tourism (DOT) is working for improved MICE (meetings, incentives, conventions, and exhibits) hosting in the area through the cooperation of all stakeholders.

Karina Rosa Tiopes, regional director for DOT Eastern Visayas, urged MICE stakeholders to cooperate rather than compete at a training session on Tuesday.

“We must organize the MICE stakeholders, collaborate, light the spark, and maintain the flame. Tiopes urged attendees at a gathering at the Oriental Leyte in this location that we must demonstrate our hospitality and avoid evaluating our offerings in comparison to those of our rivals.

The head of the Philippine Exhibition and Trade Corporation, Marisa Nallana, is committed to connecting local stakeholders with foreign organizations and offering them additional training on how to form associations.

“Organizers are searching for MICE locations outside of Metro Manila. Since the same preparations are required for both major and little events, we must be organized and ready, according to Nallana.

Event planners, hotel managers, hosts of events, photographers, and others attended the conference. According to Tiopes, this is the first gathering of MICE stakeholders since 2019.

Since national events will be held in the area next year by the Alpha Phi Omega Fraternity, Junior Chamber International Philippines, Lion’s Club, Philippine Red Cross, Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Smart Telecommunications, and DOT’s Eastern Visayas Travel Fair, she said now is the best time for business to grow.

According to Tiopes, a single MICE event could draw hundreds of visitors to a location, increasing the income of multiple proprietors of tourism-related businesses.

“Our tourism-related enterprises, including restaurants and other local businesses, profit from guest spending. In order to increase the number of MICE events, we have been encouraging the three MICE corridors to improve their hosting spaces, she continued.

The three MICE corridors in the area are Baybay City and Ormoc City in the northwest of the province of Leyte, Catbalogan City and Calbayog City in Samar, and Tacloban City and the neighboring town of Palo, Leyte.
