Positive reaction from Negros Occidental stakeholders to stable sugar supply

Tatak Kalamay, a participant in the province of Negros Occidental’s sugar sector, is hopeful about a consistent supply due to the expansion of refineries’ output.

In a statement on Tuesday, spokesperson Gerard Joseph Sarrosa acknowledged the caution shown in the sugar importation program by Administrator David Alba of the Sugar Regulatory Administration (SRA) and President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., who was also serving as the country’s concurrent agriculture secretary.

“Our sugar producers would suffer from an oversupply if we had followed through with the 300,000 metric tons (MT) sugar order,” he said.

According to SRA data, the stock of refined sugar between September and November was 228,000 MT, which is 91% more than the 119,000 MT produced during the same time the previous year.

Only half of the 300,000 MT specified in the contentious initial orderโ€”150,000 MTโ€”was imported in previous months by the importation program.

Sarrosa also acknowledged the assistance of the sugar refineries, which complied with Alba’s request to begin operating earlier than usual.

He stated, “We are grateful that industry stakeholders are cooperating to make sure we can meet the expectations of our customers.

In his words, “production is high in terms of purity which has contributed to better sugar output as well” as a result of favorable weather for sugar farmers.

To solve the shortage, SRA’s Sugar Order No. 2, issued on September 1, permitted the importation of refined sugar in quantities of 75,000 metric tons for industrial users and 75,000 metric tons for consumers, all of which arrived before November 15.

SRA determined that it was “necessary to adopt additional responsive and pre-emptive measures to ensure domestic supply and manage sugar prices, in order to achieve the foregoing policy declarations through timely government intervention by way of importation in order to maintain a balanced supply and demand of sugar for domestic consumption” after examining the comments, inputs, and information from stakeholders.
