Vargas advocates for a senior citizens’ year-end bonus.
Rep. Patrick Michael Vargas of Quezon City’s 5th District has introduced a bill that will give older citizens in need an additional year-end bonus.
The purpose of House Bill 6693, also known as the “Paskong Maligaya para kay Lolo’t Lola Bill,” is to give indigent seniors who meet the requirements of both the Expanded Senior Citizens Act and the recently passed Expanded Social Pension for Indigent Senior Citizens Act an additional year-end bonus.
The bill provides that old pensioners will get an additional PHP1,000 in addition to their PHP1,000 monthly allowance under the Social Pension for Indigent Seniors program, which will be distributed before December 25th each year.
“Our elderly citizens have given so much to our nation, and the majority of them are still able to provide for their children and grandkids. Let’s grant our lolos and lolas’ wish to receive extra advantages this holiday season, even if it means giving them a year-end or Christmas bonus, Vargas added.
Vargas claimed that by introducing HB 6693, he is carrying on the legacy and activism of his brother, the late incumbent Quezon City Councilor Alfred Vargas, who was a key figure in the creation of the Expanded Social Pension for Indigent Senior Citizens Act.
“Institutionalizing year-end bonuses are a way of improving social safety nets and protection for our older Filipinos and their families. We must provide assistance in the spirit of giving, especially to our lolos and lolas who require it more than ever, said Vargas.
