Ilonggos performed “Pamukaw” (waking) on Friday to inaugurate the 2023 Dinagyang Festival and to show off their tenacity in fighting the pandemic.

Mayor of Iloilo City Jerry Treas said during the program, “After two years of celebrating Dinagyang via virtual platforms, we are now here for a bigger, bolder, and brighter celebration.”

As we host the Pamukaw event for Dinagyangs 2023, we transmit a message of optimism and victory that, after years of the pandemic, we are still alive, stronger, and more resilient than ever, he continued.

He emphasized the festival’s underlying meaning, which is one of faith, devotion, and the expression of love, and noted that Dinagyang is more than just an occasion.

Eight barangay tribes competing in the upcoming competition gave a sneak preview of their individual performances during the “pamukaw,” which began with a mass at the San Jose Parish Church.

“This pamukaw celebration is, in fact, evidence of our fortitude and a victory over the Covid-19 health crisis, one of life’s biggest foes. Because we fiercely fought the struggle, we are present today, thriving, and prepared to announce the beginning of the Dinagyang celebrations, said Iloilo Governor Arthur Defensor in a message read by his wife Michelle Defensor.

In a subsequent interview, Joyce Clavecillas, executive director of the Iloilo Festivals Foundation Inc, stated that they want to awaken Ilonggos’ gratitude for the Senior Santo Nio’s graces and protection through the Pamukaw.
