The government’s ability to give overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) additional high-quality jobs in the Philippines, according to President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., is the “greatest Christmas gift” the government could give them.

The Filipino community in Belgium and other adjacent European nations gave Marcos a “warm” welcome despite the region’s chilly climate, he recalled in his weekly vlog, which aired on Sunday.

Additionally, he pledged that the government would continue its efforts to solve the flaws in the system of education, training, and certification for seafarers in the Philippines that the European Union (EU) had pointed out by setting up an advisory group.

“I have no doubt that our seafarers are of the highest caliber, but our system of running this industry must also be of the highest caliber so that the number one preference for seafarers will still be Filipino,” he said.

According to a United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) 2021 assessment, the Philippines continues to be the leading supplier of seafarers for both officers and ratings, across all departments, aboard merchant cargo vessels.

Filipino sailors contributed significantly to the nation’s economy in 2021, sending home a total of USD6.54 billion, up from USD6.353 billion in 2020, or by 3%.
