The continued decline in VAWC cases in the Davao Region

According to the Department of Social Welfare and Development in the Davao Region (DSWD-11), the number of cases of violence against women (VAW) in the area has been steadily declining over time.

According to Jovelyn Trajano, DSWD-11 development officer, there were 658 instances reported in 2019, 607 in 2020, and 424 in 2021.

Trajano attributed the decline to “stronger awareness campaigns against violence against women, where the authorities, DSWD, and local government units (LGU) immediately provide support to them.”

As of Dec. 15, DSWD-11 reported that 156 women had experienced physical violence, five had experienced sexual abuse, 67 had experienced psychological abuse, and 26 had experienced economic abuse.

The “18-Day Campaign to End VAW,” which is held every year from November 25 to December 12 as required by Proclamation 1172 issued in 2006, is one of the causes that DSWD promotes.

By honoring its commitment to combatting all kinds of gender-based violence as contained in the 1987 Constitution, the Philippine government is able to further its aim of defending the human rights of women and girls. This goal is supported by the 18-Day Campaign to End VAW.

Trajano urged couples to work out their issues amicably rather than turning to physical abuse and other abusive behaviors.

“It’s natural to quarrel, but if you hurt your spouse physically, emotionally, or psychologically, it’s time to report it and let these ladies know that being abused in a relationship is not normal,” she said.
