A “Climate Ambition Conference” will be held in September 2023, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres stated on Monday, promising that it “will be a no-nonsense summit.” Without exceptions No concessions.

He cautioned that the global effort to combat climate change is still going in the wrong direction during his year-end news conference.

“The 1.5-degree objective is breathless.” According to him, national climate policies are shamefully falling short of the target of keeping global warming to 1.5°C (2.7°F).

In order to achieve the 1.5°C objectives and assure support for those in need, Guterres said he will continue to press for a climate solidarity pact in which all major polluters make extra efforts to decrease emissions this decade.

I haven’t held back on the necessity for all of us to address this existential issue, and I won’t either, he continued.

Governments, corporations, cities, and members of civil society were urged to intensify their efforts.

“The summit’s invitation is open. However, there is a barrier to entrance, and the barrier to entry is unavoidable — credible, serious, and fresh climate action and nature-based solutions must be presented in order to move the needle and address the urgency of the climate problem, he continued.

The 2015 Paris Climate Agreement calls on countries to reduce their emissions by half by 2030 and to net zero by 2050 in order to battle climate change and limit global temperature to far below 2°C, preferably to 1.5°C, by the end of the century.
