To avoid injuries, DOH-6 asks the public to avoid using firecrackers.

In order to prevent injuries, the regional office of the Department of Health in Western Visayas is urging residents to forgo purchasing firecrackers and use alternate sound-making devices or organize a community fireworks display to celebrate Christmas and the arrival of the New Year.

The DOH-6 Local Health Support Division OIC-chief Dr. May Ann Sta. Lucia said in a virtual press conference on Thursday that the best thing to do is to prevent, avoid, and refrain from using firecrackers so that we can ring in the New Year in a safe and healthy way with all 10 fingers intact and without eye injuries.

The virtual press conference is a component of the “Iwas Paputok” or injury prevention campaign involving fireworks that the DOH continues to support. This campaign is outlined in Executive Order No. 28, which was signed by the late president Rodrigo Roa Duterte in 2017 and encourages the staging of public fireworks displays.

The use of musical instruments, partying, using money, tambourines, and other musical instruments or items that can make noise are just a few of the alternative ways to ring in the New Year that the DOH has long favored.

According to DOH data, there was a fluctuation in the number of fireworks-related injuries (FWRI) from 2015 to 2022.

Through its four sentinel sites and other hospitals in the area, the DOH reported a total of 130 FWRI cases between December 21, 2021, and January 1, 2022, with the largest incidences occurring in the provinces of Negros Occidental and Iloilo.

According to Sta. Lucia, the majority of the firecrackers used—such as boga, triangle, five star, camara, piccolo, and other improvised firecrackers—were illegal.

Most cases were reported on December 25, 2021, and January 1, 2022.

Sta. Lucia also urged parents to watch their kids at all times because their observation revealed that the majority of individuals affected are in the one to 20-year-old age range.

The majority of the body parts that are afflicted are the hands, eyes, and eyes, which require hospital management.

Injuries from stray bullets, fireworks poisoning, or fatalities have not been reported in the area.
