United States prepares for “dangerous” winter storm

As an Arctic winter storm blankets sections of the nation on December 22, temperatures across the US are rapidly falling. The National Weather Service has issued warnings of “dangerous cold” and “life-threatening” conditions.
It will be between -40 and -70 degrees Fahrenheit (-40 and -56 degrees Celsius), according to the weather service, with heavy snow and blizzard conditions predicted to impede traffic and damage infrastructure.
As Christmas Eve draws near, a winter weather alert is in effect for millions of Americans.
If precautions are not followed, wind chills of this magnitude can result in frostbite in less than five minutes. Prolonged exposure to the cold can potentially result in hypothermia and death.
According to flight tracking website FlightAware, more than 4,000 flights have been canceled as of Thursday, just before one of the busiest travel times of the year for Christmas.
Authorities are also worried about potential storm-related power interruptions.
