In France, the lack of medicine gets worse.

In the midst of a triple outbreak of the coronavirus, the flu, and bronchiolitis this winter, the medication scarcity in France runs the risk of getting worse.

Pediatric versions of paracetamol and amoxicillin are difficult to locate in the majority of pharmacies.

A number of drugs are being impacted by the shortage that began months ago, according to Souhil Cherraben, a pharmacist in the Parisian district of Yvelines.

He claimed that due to supply concerns, pediatric formulations of Doliprane are getting harder to find.

Although we only receive tiny numbers, there isn’t a complete shortage, according to Cherraben. Children’s medication amoxicillin is affected by serious shortages.

He described the ways that pharmacists have developed to deal with the shortage.

“Amoxicillin syrup was initially affected by the initial scarcity. By substituting it with amoxicillin tablets for adults, which may be administered to children when divided in half, the pharmacies attempted to find a solution. Therefore, neither amoxicillin syrup nor amoxicillin tablets are available “explained him.

According to Cherraben, physicians were instructed to recommend different medicines, therefore neither amoxicillin nor any other varieties of antibiotics are available.

Last Monday, the National Agency for the Safety of Medicines and Health Products (ANSM) verified that there is a supply problem with antibiotics that are mostly given to children.

At a press conference on December 14, the Health Ministry stated that the country should exercise patience since there will be a temporary scarcity of children’s paracetamol and antibiotics.

In order to address the shortage, ANSM outlined a number of initiatives, including the diversification of import sources.

Not just pediatric medications are affected by the scarcity.

According to ANSM, there will be a shortage of around 3,000 medications in 2022.

Francois Braun, the minister of health, issued a warning against a “week of peril” on Wednesday, noting that the spread of the flu causes “an explosion of cases,” some of which end up in resuscitation units, while hospitals lack enough beds.

There are other nations that experience supply problems besides France. The UK and Germany are both having trouble.

In order to improve the situation in France and Europe, China chose to expand production, decrease exports of pharmaceuticals, and increase imports.

The current Covid wave in China is going to make our supply problems for many drugs worse, according to Remi Salomon, president of the Conference of Presidents of Medical Establishment Commissions of University Hospitals in France.

Salomon emphasized the necessity to “relocate production in France” in order to prevent future shortages and health catastrophes.

Pauline Londeix and Jerome Martin, the Observatory of Transparency in Medicines Policy’s creators, argued for the necessity of French pharmaceutical manufacturing in an article published in Le Monde in March.

They wrote, bringing up once more, “the crucial topic of pharmaceutical products in Europe,” that “France and the entire planet depend on active chemicals generated in South and East Asia for the manufacturing of pharmaceutical raw materials.”

In order to lessen reliance on international pharmaceutical corporations, Londeix and Martin also referred to the conflict in Ukraine and urged for a “partially public production” in France and throughout Europe.
