On Saturday, Canada made the announcement that it would need temporary negative coronavirus testing from visitors arriving from China, Hong Kong, and Macao before their flights to the nation.

All air travelers from certain regions “shall need to produce evidence of a negative COVID-19 test result, taken not more than two days before their departure, to the airline before boarding,” according to the Canadian Health Ministry.

Beginning on January 5, the restriction will be in place for tourists who are two years old or older. The measure will remain in effect for 30 days, after which it will be reviewed by the authorities when new information and evidence become available.

The choice was made in response to an increase in instances and “little epidemiological and viral genomic sequence data on these cases,” according to the ministry.

Health Minister Jean-Yves Duclos was quoted in the statement as saying, “Our actions continue to be guided by caution, and we will not hesitate to adopt measures to protect the health and safety of Canadians.”

Prior to Canada, COVID-19 travel restrictions for visitors from China were announced by Spain, Italy, the US, Japan, and Morocco. China is currently seeing an explosive rise in infections as a result of the abrupt end to its stringent “zero-COVID” policy earlier this month.

China has begun to relax its strict pandemic precautions in response to rising unrest and unheard-of protests in some regions of the nation. The country claimed it was refocusing its efforts from limiting virus spread to preventing serious infections.

Beijing also made the decision to end universal visitor quarantine as of January 8.
