600 additional police officers will assist in securing Sinulog 2023 in Cebu City.

Since this year’s Sinulog Fiesta will be the first in-person celebration in three years owing to the Covid-19 outbreak, more police officers will be deployed beginning this week to secure socio-cultural and religious events.

600 of the 2,000 police officers in the province, according to Lt. Col. Mark Gifter Sucalit, deputy director for operations of the Cebu Police Provincial Office (CPPO), would be augmented by officers from the Cebu City police and other law enforcement agencies.

“Securing the Sinulog is really difficult. Sucalit added in a combination of Cebuano and English, “So it demands resources, which implies personnel, for the deployment.

In a customary farewell ceremony on Tuesday, the personnel who will guard important activity zones, such as the downtown area and the distance to the Basilica Minore del Sto. Nino, will be introduced.


Sucalit promised police responsiveness to citizens in other parts of the Cebu province even if more than a quarter of the staff was assigned as an augmentation force to this metropolis.

According to him, the barangay peacekeeping action squad will assist police stations in safeguarding their jurisdictions.

Thousands of followers are anticipated to join the parade from the Fuente Osmea Rotunda to the 457-year-old church for the official opening of the Fiesta Senior at daybreak on Thursday, according to the Augustinian friars of the Sto. Nio Basilica.


At five in the morning, the rector of the Basilica, Fr. Nelson Zerda, will preside over a solemn Mass that serves as the fiesta’s opening salvo and the start of a novena in honor of the Holy Child.

The holy image of the Sto. Nio will be paraded in a galleon on the “visperas” on Saturday, January 14. The morning parade will take place along the Mactan Channel, and the afternoon will feature the customary solemn foot procession.


On January 15, the solemn concelebrated Mass for Fiesta Sunday will be presided over by Cebu Archbishop Jose Palma.
