Marcos signs $2 billion fruit export agreement with China

By striking a USD 2 billion agreement with China to expand imports of high-value Philippine agricultural products, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. on Thursday increased the Philippines’ potential for fruit exports.

Marcos emphasized the enormous economic potential of the nation’s agriculture industry, which is viewed as “at the forefront” of the post-pandemic economic recovery strategy.

A convention covering phytosanitary regulations for the export of fresh durians from the Philippines to China was signed by the Philippine Department of Agriculture (DA) and the China General Administration of Customs.

The new agreement that the Marcos government obtained includes provisions for bananas and coconuts as well.

At a roundtable discussion with CEOs from the agriculture industry in Beijing, Marcos remarked, “Since the protocol for the sale of fresh Philippine durian was signed yesterday, the market for this fruit is now open to Philippine exporters and Chinese importers.”

According to him, at least four businesses have stated a desire to purchase more durian and other tropical fruit goods from the Philippines.

Fresh fruits, led by Cavendish bananas and followed by fresh pineapples, Lady Finger bananas, Solo papayas, Hass avocados, and young green coconuts, are among the major agricultural exports from the Philippines to China.

By having the Davao Durian Industry Association represent durian growers at the meeting, Marcos gave business executives confidence that they would be able to meet the “demands of the Chinese market.”

78% of the nation’s total production of durians is concentrated in the Davao region.

More than three times as many Philippine agricultural exports to China during the same period as total durian imports from Thailand in 2021, which totaled USD 4 billion.

President Marcos also praised many Chinese businesses’ plans to invest in the coconut, cattle, and durian plantation industries.

These, according to him, will improve domestic and international trade, create much-needed jobs, strengthen the sector’s R&D skills, and guarantee affordable food security.

According to Marcos, the Philippine Coconut Farmers Sector Development Plan is anticipated to aid in the restoration and modernization of the country’s coconut industry.

It intends to act as the impetus required for more Philippine coconut products to reach the Chinese market.

Alfredo Pascual, the trade secretary, praised the Philippines as a “very potential production base for agribusiness, a source of items for export to China,” during the same meeting.

He addressed the businesspeople, “We invite you to solidify your enthusiasm to make the Philippines [an] investment destination for plantation development and establishment of processing facilities.
