Negros Oriental cases of typhoid fever would increase by 143% in 2022.

According to data compiled from the prior year, the number of cases of typhoid fever in Negros Oriental increased by 143% last year.

According to Assistant Provincial Health Officer Dr. Liland Estacion, there were 440 cases from January 1 to December 31, 2022, with five deaths, compared to only 181 infections and no deaths in 2021.

According to Estacion, “it is reasonable that the number of typhoid fever cases increased last year as people started leaving their homes once the Covid-19 quarantine limits were relaxed and had more exposure to other people.”

According to her, typhoid fever is spread through person-to-person contact in addition to being brought on by contaminated food or water.

Records from the Provincial Health Office showed that the majority of cases affected the 40+ age group, which made up roughly 34% of cases, ranging in age from less than one month to 90 years old.

51 percent of all cases were female, which is the majority.

Guihulngan City has the most instances of typhoid fever (94), followed by Dumaguete City (42), Bayawan City (41), Ayungon (31), and Sta. Catalina (24).

19 other towns and localities had one to 23 infections, making San Jose the only municipality without a single case.

The five recorded deaths included two in Guihulngan City, one each in Dumaguete, Bayawan, and Bais Cities, and two in Guihulngan City.

In particular, Estacion urged people to wash their hands after using the restroom and before eating. She also advised boiling water before drinking, especially if the source is an uncovered or leaking pipe.

Now that the holidays are gone and people are no longer eating anywhere other than their own homes, she is hoping that the instances would de-escalate.
