307 incidents of firecrackers, 62% more than in 2021

The Department of Health (DOH) recorded 16 more fireworks-related injuries on Friday, bringing the total to 307, which is 62 percent more than the cases for the same time period in 2021.

The DOH stated in its case bulletin that “these [307 instances] are 3 percent fewer compared to the five-year average of cases [317] during the same period.”

130 of the instances happened at home, while about 167 happened on the streets.

86 eye injuries were suffered, compared to 20 explosion injuries that necessitated amputation.

51 cases, or 17% of the total, involved suspected alcohol intoxication at the time of injury.

According to the DOH, “two hundred forty-five or 80% of the cases were male ages one to 80 years old.” The number of sentinel hospitals that submitted an injury or zero case report before the deadline was down 37% from the same time last year.

With 139 cases, the National Capital Region (NCR) had the most.

Western Visayas is second to the NCR with 37 instances, followed by Ilocos Region with 33, Central Luzon with 24, Region 4-A (Calabarzon) with 18, and Bicol Region with 14.

The top five pyrotechnics that injured people were “kwitis,” a form of a legal skyrocket, with 65 cases; “boga” (improvised cannon), 35 cases; 5-star firecrackers in the shape of a triangle, 23 cases; and fountain fireworks, 17 cases.

The DOH reported that from 6 a.m. on December 21, 2022, to 6 a.m. on January 6, 2023, “the total number of validated stray bullet injuries continues at one.”

There were no documented deaths associated with fireworks or firecrackers, either.
