Envoy: continuing discussions to resume daily direct flights between the Philippines and China

Direct flights between China and the Philippines are being discussed again, but for now, airlines are being cautious due to the continuing coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) pandemic.

According to the Philippine Ambassador to China, Jaime FlorCruz, during the Saturday News Forum at Dapo Restaurant in South Triangle, Quezon City, the planned routes include Guangzhou, Xiamen, and Beijing.

“Our airlines do have negotiations with their counterparts to resume flights, but perhaps gradually,” FlorCruz added. “[M]ayroon nang pag-uusap ang mga airline natin sa kanilang counterparts to begin direct flights, siguro gradual.” “Po dahan-dahan (ito). This will be done gradually since our airlines are being cautious. Maingat din ang ating mga airline.”

FlorCruz stated at the same forum that China will start releasing its restrictions on outgoing and inbound travel on January 8.

“For PCR (polymerase chain reaction) testing, allow 48 hours. For outward travel, my understanding is that the prohibition on traveling through Hong Kong will be lifted, and eventually it will be lifted for all travel. According to what I understand, they would also open gates for outward traffic, such as those heading to Hong Kong and eventually other nations) “said he.

Inbound tourists will no longer be required to get a health code from Chinese diplomatic and consular offices beginning on Sunday, according to a report from the Xinhua news agency in December. On the customs card, they will list their current health status.

Those with aberrant health status declarations or fever symptoms will undergo an antigen test at customs and, depending on the circumstances, either receive treatment in a hospital or self-isolate themselves until they recover.

According to Xinhua, airlines will continue to perform cleaning on board and passengers must wear masks when flying.

However, other nations, including Australia, Canada, India, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States, have reinstituted restrictions on visitors from China, including mandating a Covid-19 test before to boarding.

Prior to the pandemic, China was the second-largest source of tourists to the Philippines, accounting for 1.74 million of the 8.26 million foreign visits in 2019.

Due to the widespread distribution of Omicron variations, Covid-19 instances are currently increasing in China.

According to the information given to the World Health Organization by Chinese scientists, the BA.5.2 and BF.7 Omicron sublineages are responsible for 97.5 percent of all local infections in China.
