Faith helps Filipinos weather the “storms” of life, says Marcos

Because of their steadfast faith, Filipinos are able to persevere in the face of life’s biggest difficulties, according to President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.

Marcos said this while participating in the Feast of the Black Nazarene with Filipino Catholics.

In his statement for the Black Nazarene feast day, Marcos remarked, “As the Catholic Faithful express their devotion to the Black Nazarene, let us also remember its deep rootedness in our Filipino culture of enduring the enormous trials and sufferings in our midst.

The storms that lie in wait for us can be surmounted, he said, “indeed, it is through our faith that we can bring forth a life full of grace and resilience.”

He urged the devout to make use of the eagerly awaited religious tradition as an opportunity to give their personal passions and struggles newfound significance.

Marcos also hoped that seeing a dark, life-size Jesus carrying his cross would encourage followers to live out “love, hope, and compassion” as they become more willing to lend a hand to others.

“Let us embody these principles together as we begin a new chapter in the history of our country so that we can collectively usher in a period of peace and prosperity for everybody. I hope everyone has a peaceful, solemn, and safe celebration,” he continued.

To allow believers to participate in the Feast of the Black Nazarene events, Marcos had already designated January 9 to be a special non-working day in Manila.

Due to the holiday, Manila also called off work for the municipal government and classes.

For the third year in a row, the Quiapo Church is abandoning the customary procession of the Black Nazarene figure from the Quirino Grandstand to the basilica in observance of the Traslacion.

In January 2020, the last procession took place.

The Traslacion, which translates to “solemn transfer,” recreates the 1787 movement of the Black Nazarene picture from its original shrine in Bagumbayan to its current location in Quiapo Church. Rizal Park is where this transfer originally took place.

The Manila Police District had stated that it anticipates 5 million devotees will engage in Black Nazarene feast day celebrations even without the Traslacion.
