A severe crisis in hospital emergency rooms was predicted by the co-president of the Swiss Society of Emergency Medicine.

Vincent Ribordy responded to the overnight closure of the emergency room at the Martigny hospital in the canton of Valais in an interview with the daily Le Temps on Monday. He said, in response to the hospital’s action, “This is simply the beginning.”

Beginning on January 9, the emergency room at the hospital in Martigny will be closed from 6 p.m. to 8 a.m. local time, according to a press release issued last week.

The hospital stated in a news release that the decision to shut down the emergency room was “taken with a heavy heart.”

It claimed that the steadily rising patient load in the ER and the escalating nursing personnel shortage were to blame.

According to Ribordy, the emergency department’s closure in Martigny is indicative of a larger issue across Switzerland.

Even if we didn’t anticipate Switzerland would be impacted so quickly and severely, he told Le Temps that “this had to happen.”

The association’s executive director sees the closure in Martigny as a direct result of the shortage of skilled workers. He claimed that the issue was well-known and had existed for some time.

The system’s capability was not as unlimited as previously believed, according to Ribordy.

He said that there would need to be alternatives to reduce the strain on emergency departments, which are currently the primary population interaction.

He cautioned, “But none of it will work as long as there is a dearth of primary care doctors,” and claimed that quota rules would not be beneficial in this situation.

Ribordy says that the profession also doesn’t receive enough respect.
