On Wednesday, Senator Joseph Victor Ejercito reaffirmed his opposition to the plan to privatize the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA), the top airport in the nation, arguing that its operation is crucial to national security and that it should remain under government control.

“I believe that what the fiasco exposed should serve as a wake-up call for us. However, when it comes to utilities that are important to national security, I continue to believe that they should be managed by the government, he stated in his statement.

Ejercito foresaw that the NAIA will experience the same destiny as the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP), a power transmission company that was privatized in 2009 and whose holdings are now held to a 40 percent majority by the State Grid Corporation of China.

“We can state with certainty that we are at odds with China. However, with just one incident like what occurred at the airport, the entire airspace system may be rendered inoperable. For several hours, air travel halted. So, without power, we may become paralyzed with just one flip,” said Ejercito, vice chair of the Senate Public Services Committee.

Ejercito asserted that while he is amenable to proposals aiming to place the NAIA under a public-private partnership, maintaining and enforcing government oversight should be given priority. He added that it is important to know what vessel or aircraft is entering the country’s airspace, “especially since we have a territorial dispute with China.”

On New Year’s Day, an unexpected system error grounded over 3,000 inbounds and departing aircraft across the nation, affecting almost 65,000 domestic and foreign travelers.

Ejercito filed Senate Resolution No. 400 three days after the event, ordering the Senate Committee on Public Services to investigate the incident and offer proposals to strengthen the nation’s aviation sector.

On January 12, the aforementioned panel will conduct its initial investigation into the incident.
