A citizen of the United States of America (USA) who went from China to Negros Oriental province and tested positive for the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) last week was taken away from the public for seven days. On Wednesday, she was allowed to go back into the community.

Jennifer Remollo, the provincial head of the Department of Health (DOH) in Negros Oriental, told the Philippine News Agency that the foreigner works in China and came to the Philippines for a vacation.

She said that the foreigner doesn’t need another Covid-19 swab once she’s out of isolation because she has no symptoms.

“That is our current policy for Covid-19 patients,” Remollo said. “However, it is now up to her to decide if she needs to have a negative swab test before she can go back to work in China.”

The person from China came to the province on December 31 and stayed at a resort in Dauin town, which is about 30 minutes south of the capital.

Assistant Provincial Health Officer Dr. Liland Estacion said that she had to get a test called Reverse Transcription-Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR) done at the provincial molecular laboratory on January 4 in order to go back to work.

The RT-PCR test came back positive, so the health officials at the resort where she was staying put her in isolation.

The Dauin local government officials also sent out its health team right away to find out who the American national had been in contact with and put those people in a separate area.

But none of the people who had contact with the person had the coronavirus.

Remollo said that this was the first foreigner and traveler from China to arrive in Negros Oriental this year who tested positive for Covid-19. The variant type of the coronavirus was not known right away.

She stressed that a memo from the Department of Health (DOH) that came out at the end of December says that all passengers coming from outside the country should be closely watched and screened.

She also said that the memorandum asking for better border control and tracking of travelers came after the number of Covid-19 cases in China went up over the holidays.

Remollo is asking local governments to keep an eye on international travelers in their own areas now that Covid-19 screening is no longer required at airports and seaports.

Remollo added that anyone with flu-like symptoms should see a doctor right away.
