Senators agree that Galvez should be put in charge of the DND.

Senators have backed Secretary Carlito Galvez Jr.’s appointment because they think he is the best person to lead the Department of National Defense (DND).

Senator Jinggoy Estrada said that President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s decision, which came three days after Gen. Andres Centino was named chief of staff of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), will give some stability to the leadership of the DND and the agencies and organizations that work with it.

In a statement, the senator said, “I hope that Galvez will eventually be nominated for confirmation before the Commission on Appointments so that he can do his job fully and not just in an acting capacity.”

Senate President Juan Miguel Zubiri said that he doesn’t see a problem with Galvez passing the Commission on Appointment (CA). He said that he knows the officer personally because they worked together on the Bangsamoro Organic Law when Galvez was the AFP Chief of Staff.

Zubiri said that even though Centino was already a 4-star General, he will still need approval from the CA. Centino was put in charge of the AFP by President Rodrigo Duterte, who was in office at the time. Lt. General Bartolome Vicente Orpilla Bacarro took his place, and President Marcos put him back in his job.

The Senate President called Galvez a man of peace and said that he was the one who suggested him to former President Rodrigo Duterte as secretary of the Office of the Presidential Adviser on the Peace Process (OPAPP) and helped him get the Bangsamoro Parliament and the Bangsamoro Transition Authority extended until 2025.

“I enjoyed working with him” (Galvez). He cares a lot about our people. He knows everything there is to know about our country’s security, both inside and outside. Don’t forget that he also helped bring the NTF-ELCAC (National Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict) into the government, which brought down communist areas in a big way. So he’s a great person for the job, and I back him 100%. I think he will have a great time with the Commission on Appointments. It won’t be easy, but it won’t be hard either. Zubiri said in a news forum.
