President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s decision not to extend the state of calamity because of the Covid-19 pandemic has been backed by Senate President Juan Miguel Zubiri. Zubiri said the president’s decision will do a lot to improve the country’s image, especially with foreign tourists.

“I agree with the President’s decision not to extend the Covid-19 state of calamity because it would really make the Philippines look bad” (if it is extended). “It’s almost back to normal, as you know,” Zubiri said in an interview on Wednesday.

He said that foreign tourists would be very hesitant to visit the country if they saw online that the pandemic had caused a state of calamity.

Zubiri said that it would look like the country has so many cases of Covid that the government can’t handle them.

“The point is that the President doesn’t want to hurt the country’s reputation by keeping the state of emergency in place for longer. He wants it fixed through the law,” he said.

Before, the Department of Health (DOH) asked President Marcos to extend the state of calamity because the proposed measure to create the Philippine Center for Disease Prevention and Control (CDC) was not passed on time.

“This is why we are focusing on getting the CDC passed. “The Department of Health’s requests for special powers, especially for the vaccination program, are now part of the bill,” Zubiri said.

Zubiri said that, in addition to the CDC bill, they are also working to get the Medical Reserve Corps bill and the Virology Science and Technology Institute of the Philippines bill passed quickly.

The President of the Senate said that Congress has also approved an extra PHP25 billion for the Covid response fund. This money will be used to pay for the salaries of health frontline workers, logistics, and other needs of the Department of Health.
