Gatchalian wants an investigation of airport infrastructure weaknesses

In order to prevent another technological failure like the one that shut down the nation’s airspace on New Year’s Day and left thousands of travelers stranded, Senator Sherwin Gatchalian said on Thursday that it is necessary to investigate the weaknesses of the Philippine airport infrastructure system.

In a statement released after submitting Senate Resolution 421 calling for an investigation into the event, he stated that any weakness “may undermine the government’s commitment to preserving our economic recovery programs, notably in the tourism and transportation sector.”

In order to prevent similar incidents and assure the safety, convenience, and legal rights of affected passengers, according to Gatchalian, the investigation should also concentrate on the “security and redundancy measures” in all facets of the nation’s air transportation system.

He noted that numerous theories about the reported cause of the technical glitch have been made since the incident, including the system’s vulnerability to cyberattacks, sabotage, the lack of a backup system outside of the airport’s boundaries, and plain incompetence on the part of traffic control personnel. He said such an investigation is necessary.

“We need to get to the bottom of these kinds of incidents in order for authorities to implement the proper actions, which includes redundancy measures to ensure that similar incidents won’t happen again,” (We need to get to the bottom of these kinds of incidents in order for authorities to implement the proper actions, which includes redundancy measures to ensure that similar incidents won’t happen again).

As the Senate Committee on Public Order opened its own investigation on Thursday, Senate President Juan Miguel Zubiri said he is considering bringing civil and criminal charges against those responsible for the New Year incident.

The uninterruptible power supply (UPS) was initially cited as the cause, but during the House investigation on Wednesday, they are now attributing the failure of the circuit breaker, according to Zubiri, who also cautioned the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) to ensure the validity of their investigations.

“Let’s not dismiss it or slap it on the wrist. We need to approach it as an international investigation and go back over all of the CCTV material and the witnesses’ testimony from that particular day. said Zubiri.
