Benhur Abalos Jr., secretary of the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG), stated on Sunday that senior police officers who choose to retire early or who submit courtesy resignations will nevertheless be thoroughly probed.

In a statement, Abalos stated that “the process does not finish at the acceptance of courtesy resignation.”

According to PNP spokesperson Col. Jean Fajardo, 97 percent of the 953 generals and full colonels have already filed their courtesy resignations.

Abalos claimed that a thorough examination and surveillance are still to come for those who would be permitted to retire and resign.

“Huwag nilang akalain na kapag nagretire na sila ay lusot na sila,” the speaker said. Po hindi. Don’t allow them believe that after they retire, they would be successful. Tuloy-tuloy ang monitoring, tuloy-tuloy ang case accumulation sa kanila. No. There will be ongoing surveillance and the development of a case against them),” he stated.

A five-person committee will be established to look into the situation, evaluate the individuals who were requested to quit and provide recommendations to the president.

Benjamin Magalong, a former police officer who is currently the mayor of Baguio City, was formerly listed as one of the panel’s members. The identities of the other four are a mystery.

“What we are anticipating is the official announcement, the composition of the five-person committee that will conduct an examination of individuals who filed courtesy resignations will be announced soon,” “In a radio interview, Fajardo stated.

The team’s makeup and the methodology for the assessment are expected to be disclosed by Abalos soon, she continued.

Sec. Abalos has stated that the squad has already arrived. We are also anticipating their evaluation of those who tendered resignations ( “Sec. Abalos said that the team was present. We are also anticipating how they would evaluate individuals who tendered resignations, she added.

Abalos stated that the names of police personnel whose resignations will be accepted would also be reviewed by the National Police Commission (Napolcom).

“That’s crucial to me, they should be thoroughly screened,” Abalos said. “I’d rather have one man go off the hook who is guilty than one innocent person removed.”

However, he reaffirmed that before reaching any decisions, the five-member committee and Napolcom would be informed by the available evidence.

Our judicial system is based on the idea that we should defend the defenseless and ensure that only those who commit crimes are punished. We have a solemn responsibility to do it, and we won’t stop until it’s done, added Abalos.

Those officers who are proven to have connections to illegal drug activities will be charged, according to Fajardo. They can, however, challenge the judgment and pursue additional legal recourse.

PNP chief Gen. Rodolfo Azurin Jr. had earlier claimed that at least 10 police officers were reportedly involved in narcotics trafficking.

He questioned whether the courtesy resignations of these 10 officers had been tendered, nevertheless.
