The government will keep a 2-month buffer stock of sugar: Marcos

President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. announced on Sunday that the government will henceforth keep a two-month buffer supply of sugar as part of the efforts to ensure a sufficient reserve in the nation.

“From now on, we will maintain a two-month buffer stock in sugar… so that people will know hindi tayo magkaka-shortage dahil lagi tayong mayroon two-month na buffer stock which I will maintain (that we will not be experiencing a shortage because we will have a 2-month buffer stock which I will maintain),” “Marcos spoke with reporters during a flight to Davos, Switzerland for the World Economic Forum (WEF).

The chief executive talked about his administration’s objectives to combat smuggling and improve the production side of agricultural items in addition to making sure there was a buffer stock.

“The illicit trade, ‘yun talaga… i-solve ‘yun is possible. Even if someone manages to smuggle something, the problem of smuggling in the Philippines needs to be solved. They smuggle anything because it’s so common in our nation). We need to seriously investigate that, and we have some excellent ideas, added Marcos.

According to Marcos, the Philippines can embrace smuggling prevention measures used by other nations.

The digitalization of the Bureau of Customs (BOC) “is going to be an important component of that,” the chief executive added.

The President stated last week during a meeting with the Private Sector Advisory Council (PSAC) that the current system is ineffective and that government institutions must take action to effectively combat widespread smuggling.

In order to prevent smuggling, reduce logistics costs, and ensure the ease of doing business, Marcos ordered reforms in the bureaucracy as his administration strives to support foreign investment and commercial activity in the nation.

The chief executive told reporters that the government should support the onion and sugar industries in terms of production.

“Production is the most significant aspect of the overall issue. We must revisit the sugar business. In order for us to increase our production and eliminate the need for imports, we must return to the onion growers and assist them, added Marcos.

Instead of focusing on improving the production side, the President bemoaned how used the nation is on importation.

“Diyan, you’re naipit, eh. Tayo masyado tayo sa import. Therefore, imports are needed; the production side is not being addressed by us. Importing is so commonplace to us. We don’t develop the production side; we just import,” stated Marcos.

“We definitely felt the impact of the epidemic when it hit us, Kaya nung tinamaan tayo sa pandemya,” The President emphasized that “the inflationary forces there reach the Philippines in the same way that they do now when we lose supplies from outside or when we import goods from abroad.

Meanwhile, the President claimed that in order to guarantee a sufficient supply and maintain market pricing, the government was compelled to import onions.

Onion, may nagsasabi, hindi kailangan mag-import. Is it true that you are unable to import? Tingnan mo ‘yung demand, tingnan mo ‘yung production ng Pilipinas, malayo talaga. Some people stated that we don’t need to import onions, while others said that we should take all smuggled goods. Kulang pa rin because of this. Why don’t we need to import? There is a significant disparity between Philippine supply and demand, as can be shown. We made an effort to obtain all of the illicit goods, but we weren’t able to use them all, Marcos stated.

In order to protect farmers during harvest season, the government will introduce a calibrated importation of onions, Department of Agriculture Assistant Secretary Kristine Evangelista previously declared.
